After graduating from the University of Kentucky with a degree in architecture, Christopher Hayse began working under an architect who specialized in home design. While at this job, he began taking note of interior spaces and the interaction of designed objects within them. Inspired by numerous architects who have contributed to the field of furniture design, Christopher decided to pursue a Master of Arts in Furniture Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design. While at SCAD, Christopher has learned various construction methods, showcased his impeccable craftsmanship, and honed his design philosophy as it relates to furniture design.
StatementCharacterized by prominent angles, a subdued color palette, and a striking combination of boldness and subtlety, my work aims to reinterpret minimalism as it relates to furniture design. Influenced by minimal artists such as Donald Judd and Sol LeWitt, my furniture considers the piece’s overall form as much its function. Ultimately, my furniture exploits the line between art and design, creating ambiguous pieces that can inhabit a variety of spaces and serve multiple functions.
